Re: foreign-born soldiers in 9th Georgia?

Alan, what I'm researching now are the former Confederates who joined the Union Army. What I am finding at this stage are more than 50% of them have foreign birth or being born in Northern states. As an example the Confederate CMSR's list the soldier as being born in Ireland and the Union CMSR's list him as being born in Kerry County Ireland. It does make some sense as the South was not their native born land. I also have to consider the conscription acts and when they joined the Confederate service. However there is no way to tell if a soldier who enlisted in 1861 and more or less was forced to sign up again after his term was really forced into service or did so out of patriotism. During the Gettysburg campaign which I am defining as June 3, 1863 until July 24, 1863 more than 300 captured Confederates would join the Union Army. Even the term capture is subject to interpretation. I am not reseraching into the area if they deserted prior to or after the battle or if they were wounded and captured near the stone wall at Pickett's charge. For right now a prisoner is a prisoner regardless of how he was taken as prisoner. The following soldier may or may not be related to you and it does appear that he was born in Georgia. Here is the short bio of Henry Pitts.

Henry Pitts - Believed to be a former Confederate with Company G 9th Regiment, Alabama Infantry. Hill's Corps; Anderson's Division; Wilcox's Brigade. Confederate CMSR's list him as being a prisoner at the Gettysburg campaign and shown as being desirous of joining Union Army and being transferred to the 3rd Maryland Cavalry from Fort Delaware. Confederate CMSR's also list him as being born in Georgia and enlisting in the 9th Alabama in June 1861 at Greenville, Alabama. Union CMSR's list him as enlisting in Company F of the 3rd Maryland Cavarly on September 18, 1863 at age 20 at Fort Delaware and being mustered in on September 23, 1863 and Union records also list him as being a farmer prior to the War and report his place of birth as Jones County, Georgia. Union CMSR's list him as having blue eyes, brown hair, bronze complexion, and his height at 5' 4 and 1/2 inches. It is noted that he probably could not write as he signed with a X. The 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's list him as deserting his unit in January 1864 at Camp Lockwood near Baltimore, Maryland. What happened after this point is not known. It is known that the 3rd Maryland Cavalry boarded a steamer in January of 1864 and was taken to Louisiana. The 3rd Maryland Cavalary would be one of the few units who had former Confederates who did not go West to engage the Indians. It would appear that Henry Pitts did not want to arrive in Louisiana with a blue uniform.
