Hello Tom, Those were my original thoughts also; being they were probably buried in local cemeteries. The folks at NARA thought otherwise and when I looked at the research and it did say under the York Hospital that the confederate dead were removed to Richmond, Virginia.

The people at NARA seem to think it was the UDC who removed the Confederate Dead at Gettysburg and also went to surrounding hospitals to recover the dead. I'll be at the UDC headquarters in Richmond, Virginia next week and speak with Betty (at the UDC library) she would know some answers. Thx Dennis
