I have read that some confederate wounded actually got better faster due to infestations of maggots in their wounds. They received so little care that their open wounds got maggots in them which kept the wounds clean. Northern wounded had more stinking wounds that festered due to lack of ways to clean wounds or lack of nurses. However, they did not have as many flies so less maggots in the wounds. Considering no one knew anything much about medical matters except amputation for broken bones and certain death for wounds to the guts. I guess you just either lived or died according to the wound.
