Thanks Alan, but this confuses me even further, as Francis Marion Bates, the actor, was born in Boston (one source even indicates birth in New Orleans). Could one reason for his discharge, under this law, be because he was a stage actor, or did the "domicile" law only cover those who were not citizens of the Confederate States? If the law only referred to those who were foreigners, then this person, Francis M. Bates, who served in the 3rd Georgia, may not have been the actor at all.
