Ms Dalton,

The referenced letter signed by I. G. DuPre M.D. (possibly J. G. DuPre) was the one I took the quote from about the "old 25th." The letter was dated Feb 6th, 1900, and written to my great-grandfather, F. B. Austin who was living in Savannah, Georgia. Dr. DuPre was living in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. In the letter he invites my great-grandfather Austin to visit him, "Try to come to Charleston in June the best time for bathing & water sports at the 'Isle of Palms.' You will get out of the car over here at Station No. 2, which is just by my house." He goes on to say, "I have been married twice & have three grown children. It was the illnefs & death of my first wife that got me a discharge before the Surrender, and yet I was on duty in No. Ca. at that time." He ends it with a "P.S. I will be 73 yrs old next July - am young yet & fat--"

I have not transcribed any of the letters. I have a copy of each one filed with the genealogy material on my great-grandfather. If this is your ancestor, I will be happy to send a transcribed copy to your email address. My cousin did not put a restriction on the copy I was given, but I hesitate to "publish" her letters without her permission.

I think you can safely take the following information about DePre from the letter:

1) He was born between Feb. 7, 1827 and Feb 6, 1828
2) His first marriage probably occurred prior to the Civil War
3) His first wife died prior to April 1865
4) His second marriage occurred after April 1865
5) He had 3 grown children in 1900 who could have been born during either one marriage or both
6) He was possibly a medical doctor
7) He serviced in the "25th" during the Civl War
8) He was discharged prior to the surrender in April 1865
9) He knew a "D. Hasell died some years ago, somewhere near Georgetown"
10) He saw a Col. Hudson "many times" as he had "spent days in my house when he presided as Judge on this circuit"
11) He attended the "big reunion" in 1899 and was "in the possession"
12) His home was located near Station 2 in Mount Pleasant in 1900
13) He apparently enjoyed water sports and the beach
14) He signed the letter as "DuPre"
15) He died sometime after Feb 6, 1900

I hope this helps you in your search and that he is your ancestor. He sounds like a kind and noble man. I have previously researched the names of all listed in the letters in ancestry.com. The searches reported zero results on both I. G. abd J. G. Depre.

Joan
