In Response To: Battle of Ruff's Mill ()

Hi Michael,

The Atlanta Campaign is one of my areas of interest and I have been to this site many times over the years.

The best maps for the campaign are found in William Scaife's book on it - they are done as an overlay over modern roads so you can really get the feel for where you are standing and who was there in 1864.

Ruff's Mill was part of the fighting that took place after Kennesaw Mountain while Johnston was falling back to the River Line. Thie Ruff's Mill sector was the left flank of the line whose right flank was at Rottenwood Creek with Smyrna in the center then it went west along a ridge line, the highest part being where Concord Road crosses US 41/South Cobb Drive today. The view from this intersection is terrific! The fighting was above the mill and creek site along Concord Road where some older subdivisions are today.

Scaife's map does not have a tactical breakdown of Stevenson's Division by brigade sadly - just the division's line on July 4, 1864.

Wish I could help you more.
