I am no authority on Quantrill, but would like to point out that Jay Monaghan was more of a novelist than a historian. He wrote in a breezy and easily readable style, which partly accounts for his enduring popularity, but his research was minimal and he had an alarming tendency to fill in the blank spaces with colorful claptrap. Relying on Monaghan as an authoritative source is a serious error.
