Thank you all for your information and replies, it's a big help to me. To answer your question on his middle initial: Elijah's middle initial was B standing for Baylis, after his grandfather, Baylis Ashby. There are variations including Bayliss, Bayless, etc.

My Elijah Lake was living in Kansas during the War Between the States, and since this regiment was organized in Oklahoma I thought this may have been the closest to where he lived at. His residence in 1860 was, I believe, Anderson County, Kansas. The family story of how he drove wagons during the Civil War didn't tell which side he did this for.
