These three captains are the late arrivals to Wilson Creek, as far as I can tell. Whitfield would also have been there except for the added distance. Add to them Capt Murphy and his independent Arkansas Cavalry Troop, this became the basis of Whitfield's Battalion. The Three being almost 10 years younger than Whitfield and lacking the Mexican War experience that he had, caused McCulloch to give the nod to Whitfield for the command along with the fact that Whitfield looked Military.
Whitfield's Company was recruited in Lavaca County which had a population of less than 500. Was Co. A 4th Bn
E. R. Hawkin's Company came from Hunt and Titus Counties. Was Co. B 4th Bn
John R. Broocks Company came from St Augustine County. Was Co. C 4th Bn
B. H. Norsworthy's Company came from Jasper. Was Co. D 4th Bn.
I am still looking for info on Capt Murphy's Arkansas Company. Was Co E 4th Bn
These company alignments are always changing as I get better data.
Some of the four companies were short men at muster. Seems the short distance to home caused some to feel free in going home. Most of one company was in Texas for Christmas. So some men were actually mustered in Texas after the original muster. In January '62 a good many were home.
One thing missing from the other message was that The John Griffith who led the 6th detachment is not mentioned in the Hatley book led a charge that caused the Indian rout and running battle. This the same Griffith who designed and led the Holly Springs under Van Dorn. He later was a Brig Gen in Texas of 2nd TST.
