My interest in the mills of the IT plus SW Mo., and NW Ark., is to illustrate their importance to the maintenance of any particular military force in either garrison or in the field. The type of mill is important in that if the mill is strictly a water operated mill then it would be seasonal in its use. An example of year round usage is the Steam operated mill in Newtonia, owned by Mathew H. Ritchey. That mill was used to control that part of the country and changed hands often.
