Drew, I haven't read Warde's When the Wolf Came: The Civil War and the Indian Territory. I did hunt for it locally a few days ago but couldn't find it -- I'll have to order online.

I read what is available to preview on Google Books. I was pleased with the amount of quotes from first hand accounts on some subjects. However, the rest is just a regurgitation from previous authors with no additional research or validation.

I was immediately turned off to this book when I read the account and source citation regarding Phillips' Feb. 1864 expedition and the Battle of Middle Boggy (p. 200). I knew the source of this without looking and can also tell you a source that was obviously not used, i.e. the Official Records. The source is Ramp & Ramp and the online article in the Encyclopedia of Oklahoma.

My first impression is that this book offers little in the way of new insights and lacks any scholarly historical research. I'll buy it and read it in it's entirety -- maybe it will change my opinion.
