Re: Munfordville KY Civil War sites....

Phil,

Yes the monument in Horse Cave is an interesting story. According to local legend, as the Confederate troops were moving up towards Munfordville the Union troops had fell trees to slow the progress of the Confederates. One of the soldiers sat down to rest on a log and laid his rifle down. As he was doing this, the trigger hit a limb and accidentally went off killing the soldier. He was laid to rest at the spot of today's monument. A farmer (Sam Lively) in the 1930's, fearing the gravesite would be lost, (grave was just marked with stones) sent off for the stones and built the monument. If you have not been to the monument and need directions let me know and I will pass them on.

Also, in the area of the Historic Preserve in Munfordville there is a monument to Col. Smith from Mississippi. This stone was provided by his brother and is quite unique.

I hope this is helpful.
