Re: Clay's or Jenkins Batteries

Len,

In your last post about the 1st Battle of Saltville, you wrote that the Confederate units involved were: the 1st & 9th Ky., Johnsons Battalion, Jenkins Battery, Clays Battery, 64th Va. Reg, 10th Ky., as well as the Home Guard units under Trigg and Preston, Kent's Wythe County Guard, Robertson's Brigade and Dribrell's Brigade. Artillery was under Capt. John Barr on Church Hill and Capt. Hugh McClung's Tenn. Battery on Chestnut Ridge with four six-pounders."

I thought I'd mention that at the battle of Middle Creek The 54th Virginia Infantry was led under a Colonel John H. Trigg. Could this possibly be the same Trigg? Also, when I first began looking into finding information on Clay, it was also just referenced in the Battle of Middle Creek as Clay's Battery.

I found this link rather helpful - http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ - but I don't know how reliable the information is in reguards to the Confederate troops. I checked it out for the Union Troops and it seems quite good. I wish they gave enlistment dates, though. "The War of the Rebellion" might contain more clues if you have the time for all that reading.

Good Luck,

Julie
