Re: 1st to 3rd Kentucky Cavalry CSA

In order to locate the right records, it's important to know something about Morgan's Kentucky cavalry command. After most officers and men were captured at Buffington Island, the rest who missed the raid or escaped reassembled as "Morgan's Men". There are three records for a James or 'J' Jackson which fit this category.

The first appears with Lieut. C. W. Beck's Company, Morgan's Men, under the name J. D. Jackson. Present Aug. 31, 1863, the roll states he was enlisted by Col. Bullett (Butler), Sept. 2, 1862, Owenton KY. The enlistment information is interesting because Butler's 3rd Kentucky Cavalry organized in the late summer of 1862 with a consolidated battalion formed of Helm's 1st Kentucky Cavalry.

Enough of Morgan's cavalry reported that three battalions could be organized. Among these battalions, we find James Jackson in Co. B, Kirkpatrick's Battn. Jackson was captured July 16, 1864, Caldwell County KY, and sent to Camp Douglas, IL. The record shows that he was released from Camp Douglas on May 13, 1865.

The last mention of this man is a misfiled card in another soldier's service file. This man served with the 3rd Kentucky Mtd. Regt. The misfield record reads, 3rd Kentucky Regt., Co. B. That might tell us the original company assignment for Jackson. It shows him to have been captured at Princeton KY, July 10 (16?), 1864, and released at Camp Douglas, May 13, 1865. Remarks for this record include a note, 'Paris, Tennessee', which could mean the released prisoner intended to go to that town.

Do you know where this man lived in 1860? Where di he live after the war? Do you know if he applied for a Confederate veteran's pension?
