Col Charles Wickliffe born 6 may 1819 records in Cemetery book show date of death or burial perhaps 17 april 1862 in Bardstown Cemetery. He is the son of Nathaniel Wickliffe and Anne Logan, they had ten children, Charles being the second son according to John D Wickliffe who wrote history on Wickliffe Family, Charles was wounded first day in the battle of Shiloh and died 3 days later he stated, John D Wickliffe states that after the war his body was brought back to Bardstown for burial. Dates dont correspond with info given by John D Wickliffe that match headstone, April 6 first day battle of Shiloh TN three days later would be April 9th, 1862 date of death. Headstone which i have not viewed yet according to Nelson County Genealogical Society book that was done of all cemeteries in Nelson County Ky says 17 April 1862.So work needs to be done here , will follow up.
Col Wickliffe, entered West Point and graduated in 1837. He hobnobbed as they say with some of the Major Union Generals of the soon to be Civil War. He served until 1844 then went to Blandville Ky (Ballard County) where he practiced law. He married Eugenia Moore , of Ballard County Ky, when the Mexican war broke out he enlisted and was assigned the rank of Capt. He was promoted to Major after the Battle of Monterrey and was in charge there and the region around it as military governor. after peace was declared he resigned again and resumed his law practice.
When the U S Civil War started he enlisted and was commissioned a Col. He met or joined in Western Ky and eventually ended up under i think Gen Buckner and Gen. Leonidas Polk
When he died he left (i assume his wife still living?)two sons, John B and Charles Wickliffe, his son Charles was the father of Dr Payne Wickliffe and others. Hope this info will help Joe
