Did not know they had three tries at camels. The key problem with the camel, based on the first experiment was the type of terrain they went over. If you look at North African Camels, they generally are on sandy soil. But the southwest is mostly rocky - I think had they tried the Asian Camel, which was used on a more similar terrian to the US southwest, it might have succeded.

I think tho the key as to a possible camel in Mississippi is in the third paragraph on the web site, which states:

"" Despite their demonstrated value, camels were not again used. Those at Camp Verde fell into the hands of Confederates in 1861. After the war, any project associated with the name of Jefferson Davis was discredited, and no one ever attempted to revive the idea. The camels were sold at auction, and the army mule continued to enjoy its customary supremacy. ""

The paragraph states that the camels were sold at acution, but I am unclear as to the time line. I would suspect they sold them in 1860 or 61, after the experiment, but before Confederate control of Camp Verde. No matter the time line, perhaps a travelling circus or show picked one up, and it ended up in Mississippi??
