Yes, you are right -- there never was a "US Camel Corps."

That name is just so handy to use for anything involved in the US Army's camel experiments that it's stuck over the years.

There's even a great book on the experiment entitled (you guessed it!) -- "The US Camel Corps: An Army Experiment."

I tend to think that Douglas was privately acquired, but am waiting until I can get to the National Archives camel corps records to see if there is, indeed, some connection between Lt. Hargrove of the 43rd MS Inf. and the US Army in the west pre-Civil War.
