In Response To: Co D, 7th Louisiana Cavalry ()

Unfortunately, few records of the men who served in the 7th Louisiana Cavalry Regiment survived the war, so it is extremely difficult to document their service. Because many regiments in Louisiana disbanded at the end of the war rather than being surrendered as a unit, the soldiers did not receive official paroles. Thus Fontenot would not appear in Booth's books. My research indicated that most of the men of this regiment were on duty in South Louisiana when the Trans-Mississippi Department surrendered. I don't know why Fontenot would have claimed to have been near Alexandria with General Thomas. The latter commanded an infantry brigade there. I am not aware of any cavalry units serving in his command.

You will find a brief history of the regiment in my book "Guide to Louisiana Confederate Military Units, 1861-1865" (LSU Press, 1989).
