I sure am not an expert but have studied my own heritage. In 1603 James VI of Scotland became James the I of England and set out to pacify the "Borders"of Scotland. In the decade that followed many of these Border(Riding) clans(Elliot,Nixon Armstrong,Irvine to name a few) were executed, banished, their lands siezed by the crown. The power and social system of these clans were broken and never regained power. Many of these broken clans opted for a new life in Donelgal,Ulster and Fermanagh counties,Ireland to escape persecution... MyGGGGrandfather came from MaGuires Bridge area of Fermanagh Co.in 1823. He spelled his name Elliott which is the Irish spelling of a Scots name.In Scotland there are seventy ways to spell Elliot none spelled Elliott. For some reason the Eliots,Elliots and so on despise the double L double T spelling.Ironically It was my Grandfathers pet pieve as to be spelled correctly in his eyes. Him spending hours writing letters correcting mis-spellings. An old rhyme tries to explain,

The Double L and sngle T,
Descend from Minto and Wolflee.
The double T and single L ,
Mark the old race in Stobs that dwell.
The single L and single T,
The Eliots of St.Germains be,
But the double T and Double L,
Who they are no one can tell.
For the double L and double T,
The Scots should look across the sea."

I am a Scot -Irish American with ties to 14th century Scotland as a recognized clan at the time of Robert the Bruce. Living proof of the Scot-Irish existance.
Respectively Submitted, Michael P.Elliott
