The King diary is, as far as I know, the only diary of anyone in the 28th Louisiana. The Lincoln Parish Library has a xerox copy. A couple of years ago they would allow readers to check it out and make a copy for personal use but I'm not sure if they still do that or not. The diary is interesting but it has very little info on the battles. King often was sick or detached from the unit (although he was captured in the Bayou Teche campaign) so he really did not see any combat, and as Art mentioned, he was not with the regiment at Mansfield. However, he did march all over Louisiana and has some wonderful comments on different areas, particularly North Louisiana. King wrote a good deal about his time at Camp Vienna, the Monroe area, Columbia, and Shreveport. What I remember most is the fact he complained constantly. At one time I thought about editing the diary myself and was going to use the subtitle "How I Moaned and Complained through the Civil War." Gary has been working on the project for several years and has discovered a good deal of info on King's personal life. It should be a very good book.
