Lieutenant Oscar Gaudet commanded two 12-pounder howitzers, not 30-pounder Parrott rifles. The Confederates had a 30-pounder Parrott in Fort Beauregard when they abandoned it in September 1863, but they destroyed it because they could not get it and the other heavy artillery pieces out of the fort before the Federal land force reached Harrisonburg.
