The statement that "Acadian's were forced to fight in the civil war as they were against slavery" is a gross oversimplification on several levels. Many Cajuns (they were not called Acadians any longer) owned slaves. While many Cajuns were drafted into the Confederate army, so were many men of Anglo-Saxon background. Thousands of Cajuns joined willingly and fought until the end of the war. I doubt that desertion rates among Cajuns were any higher than any other ethnic group. Very few Cajuns joined the Union army during the war.
