The surname is more common than you may think, as it is only a spelling variant of the more common Gillespie(from the gaelic, Giolla Euspuig - the treasurer or financier of the bishop). Researching my Gillespie ancestors, I've found my direct line surname spelled 4 different ways, and am aware of more than 30 found by others.

I did not find a Lane Gallaspie in either the Union or Confederacy (you didn't say which). I then went to a WBTS search engine and entered the given name Lane. There were 31 in the Union, 23 in the Confederacy, no surname close to Gallaspie.

You state he lost a leg during the War, but didn't state if it was because of combat. Could it have been a farm or factory accident? Possibly he did not serve either side.

Can someone provide the units that were formed in the Vernon Parish area?
