Steve: The cask of wine thing (or, at least, cask of something alcoholic) mentioned here makes me wonder how common it was for bodies to be shipped in some sort of alcohol-bearing container. Col. Wm. H. Moore, who formed and led both the 11th MS and the 43rd MS, was MW at 2nd Corinth. He apparently knew US Gen. Rosecrans, because, when Moore died about a month after being MW, Rosecrans had his body sent through the lines in "a barrel of whiskey." I wonder if other folks have similar stories they could post here? -- Jim H.
