Re: New Grave Marker 2nd LA Cav Marsden Campbell

Don,

Thanks for the reply. BTW, Marsden never actually had a middle name and the same is true for his father and grandfather, each named Marsden.

The VA only allows reference to one unit on the headstone and typically the unit where highest rank was obained. I had to rely on his obituary notice in the New Orleans Daily Picayune which listed the 2nd LA Cav as his unit though in his Confederate Veterans membership he listed both Dreux's Battalion and the 2nd Cav as his units.

Marsden is the youngest brother of William Simpson Campbell and James Green Campbell. For proof that might be acceptable is the Sons of the American Revolution application submitted by William Simpson Campbell's son, William Simpson Campbell in September 1924, national number 40193. He lists William Simpson Campbell as his father and (Dr.)Marsden Campbell (II) as his grandfather.

Marsden II is the father of all three boys. I will make an effort to identify the documentary evidence for James Green Campbell though at this point I can only say I know because that is the family history.

Also, W.S. Campbell served in the Confederate Navy on the gunboat CSN Ponchartrain and that info is noted in his widow's application for Confederate Pension.

Hope the info helps. I will provide more if I can locate it.

David
