I have several questions. First, how common were the sword style of bayonets at this point in the war? Second, would this be an indication that the entire regiment (or maybe company) were equipped similarly? Would having a sword bayonet indicate what type of rifle or musket they may have been issued? (for instance would it exclude an Enfield?)
This is interesting because records show that they were involved in hand-to-hand combat at Shiloh. I've read that this style was difficult to use mounted and might have been more commonly removed and used in hand.
