In Response To: Sword Bayonet ()

In general, the sword bayonet was utilized with two-band rifled muskets (i.e., enfields, modified Mississippi's, etc.). They did have a good length and weight to them, which went used in bayonet vs bayonet made it kind of diffecult to handle. Three-band rifles (i.e., enfields, springfields, cs richmonds, etc) had the traditional tri-angular bayonet. In comparison the two-band rifle with sword bayonet attached was approximately the same lenght as a three-band rifle with tri-angular bayonet attached. Tho the two-bander was front heavy.

IF I remember correctly Companies A and B of Wheat's Battalion were issued Mississippi's but without the lug needed to attach a bayonet. They were issued/purchased/stole knives and such. In Wheat's Battalion, Co A (first company) and Co B (fifth company) had rifled muskets, while the three middle companies had traditional smooth bore muskets, with triangular bayonets. If memory is failing be will be corrected.
