The First Division, Second Brigade of Louisiana Militia was defined by law in 1853 as including citizens from Orleans Parish below Canal Street, St Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes. A man didn't join the militia (not this kind); he belonged by virtue of his residence and citizenry.

When the U.S. Navy sailed into the port of New Orleans, nearly all militia in and around the city disbanded and went home. Durrell probably did likewise.
