The Louisiana in the Civil War Message Board

Re: 1st Regiment,LA Militia, P W Durell

Pam --

The State of Louisiana recognized two types of militia organizations. Depending on residence, all male citizens belonged to one of the five militia divisions established by the law of 1853. As we know, P W Durell belonged to the 1st Division, 2nd Brigade.

Men who reported at Camp Moore after the fall of New Orleans were almost entirely volunteers, the other type of militia. These were citizens who opted to join a volunteer militia command like the Sumter Regiment. Survivors of the Sumter Regiment and other Louisiana volunteer militiamen reorganized for Confederate service as required by the Confederate law of Apr 16, 1862.

It's entirely possible that a citizen belonging to a one of the five militia divisions reported at Camp Moore. However, members of these divisions weren't ordered to report. Also, unless this man's name appears on roll with another unit, it does appear that PWD "just went home." I searched Confederate Miscellaneous records just to be sure, using alternate spellings of the last name such as Dorell &c. A majority of both types of militia in New Orleans "just went home", and since New Orleans remained under Federal control for the remainder of the war, were permanently lost to the Confederacy.

It's not the answer you may have wanted, but I hope it helps.
