Pope for the war, promoted to 2nd Lieutenant September 20, 1861, admitted Receiving and Wayside Hospital, Gen. Hosp. No. 9, Richmond, Va. June 17, 1864, transferred next day to Louisiana Hospital, Richmond, no further records

His file for the 15th Louisiana Infantry contains 66 cards with one card which contains correspondence between the Adjutant General War Department with the Louisiana Board of Pension Commissioners dated November 25, 1914

"The Confederate records show that Joseph H. Dale served as Captain in Company B, 7th Battalion (which became Company I, 15th Regiment) Louisiana Infantry, C.S.A.; that he entered the service June 9, 1861 and was wounded and made a prisoner at the battle of Belle Grove on October 19, 1864.
The Union prisoner of war records that he was captured at Woodstock, Va., October 20, 1864, and was released June 17, 1865, at Ft. Delaware, Del., on taking the oath of allegiance."
