Anything for the guy that runs this wonderful site. I normally leave the Confederate regulars to some of the others, but I got lucky on this one (or rather you did), and BG Jackman happens to be a favorite of mine.

This search for which of Jackman's companies came from where looked bleak at first since Jackman's own memoirs prepared so well by Norton don't address this. Also, the two major sources I use to tell one Confederate unit from another (Crute's 1987 "Units of the Confederate Army" and Sifakis' 1995 "Compendium of the Confederate Armies") don't go below regimental level. Further, Crute and Sifakis tell me that Jackman first formed the 7th MO Inf in August 1862 but that it was incomplete and later (1 Apr 1863) folded into the 16th MO Inf. These sources don't address Jackman's recruiting work under the Union noses in Boone and Howard Counties in 1863, so I suppose Jackman was unable to extract very many men from that scary campaign. Crute and Sifakis do state that Jackman did put together a cavalry regiment in 1864, but that it was also incomplete and fell apart with the end of Price's MO raid in November 1864.

However, there is a little-known work, Ozarks Genealogical Society, "Confederate Organizations, Officers and Posts, 1861-1865, published 1988 in Springfield by that society in pamphlet form that at least lists on page 37 some of the company commanders of Jackman's 16th MO Inf (sorry, no Company G). I ran the names of the regimental staff and company commanders against the index to the 1860 MO Census and found those listed seem to have come from either Newton and McDonald Counties in the far southwest MO corner or from the Cass, Henry, Johnson County area of west-central MO. Here is my guesswork based on the names and surnames I found:
LTC Levin M. Lewis--also commmanded Company A-- Washington Twp., Clay Co.?
LTC W. H. Cumming--found him in Buffalo Twp. McDonald Co.;
LTC Jesse P. Herrell--Dallas Co., also earlier commanded Company C;
Company B--CPT B.N. Cocke--Henry, Benton, Cass, or Johnson
Company D--CPT D. M. Raker--south-central Johnson Co.
Company E--CPT J. W. Bullard--a John W. in Lafayette Co.
Company F--CPT J. H. Gillett--Dade, Cass, or Henry Co.;
Company H--CPT D. T. Lauderdale--Newton or McDonald Co.;
Company I--CPT E. Allison--Spring Creek Twp, Maries Co.?;
Company K--CPT E. F. Bronaugh--Henry or Cass Counties.

If you will give me the names of some of the older members of Company G, particularly the commissioned and noncommissioned officers, I will apply them against the 1860 MO Census index prepared by the LDS and I should be able to locate some of these guys for you. I have found the older men were more apt to be listed in the 1860 MO census as heads of households, and we can get better identification that way. Of course, we don't get much luck with this method on Jones, Brown, Harris, Johnson, and other common names. This whacky method works rather well, but expecially on unique names. Feed me some of the Company G names and I will try it. I did find a George C. Newton in Nodaway Twp., Holt County in far northwest MO, but I don't know if that is your ancestor.

As to why the 16th MO Infantry was termed as "mounted" I will remind you that several of these companies were recruited way behind Union lines during the great Confederate recruiting drive of August 1862 under extreme pressure and they had to be mounted to outrun the Union cavalry and get back to the main Rebel army in Arkansas. I cannot recall from my reading if these men fought at Lone Jack on 16 Aug 1862, but I think they did. They had a wild horse race to get to Arkansas and safety. I wonder if the Trans-Mississippi Department had a quota of how many cavalry and infantry regiments they wanted, and Jackman lost the toss of the coin and was not allowed to call the 16th a cavalry outfit.
