Thanks Kirby. Once again you got out and with a mighty shove unstuck the old mud-bound wagon. I will make another journey to the University Archives at Columbia and go through the Louisiana Papers for the time of the monument dedication.

I do have one more puzzler for you. This concerns Captain Herring's gravesite. I have not yet confirmed everything but I am jabbing at it when I find the time. It seems Captain Herring was buried at his inlaws "burying place" 5 miles from town, (that is how it was recorded in the City Council records). There is a graveyard about 5 miles out from where the city limits would have been at the time and I am assuming that is the one referred to. His grave is now located and marked by stone in the City's Riverview Cemetery. How common was it to move bodies back then?

Since I started looking into the history of Captain Herring, the Red Rovers, and the 3rd MSM in general it seems I can't get one question answered before two or more pop up waiting for answers too.

Just a little background: When Captain Herring was brought home in June 1864, there was much ado from the city fathers, but his wife was visiting a sister in Fort Madison and didn't return for the funeral and no mention was made at all of the in-laws other than the proposed gravesite being on his father-in-laws farm. His widow later married an ex-confederate Colonel who served the confederate army as a docter. His wife was awarded a 'widows' pension and there was a boy who received a pension on Captain Herring's service as well. The boy is listed under the name of the second husband but I do believe he was Captain Herring's blood and had just taken or had been given his step-fathers last name.

That is about all the gossipy stuff that I have came across, great cause for over the fence chatter but nothing solid enough to swear "that is a fact".

I wish I could give you names and dates but sadly they are still locked up in my old computer and it decided to take a nap on me. My computer guy thinks he can get it back on for me but til he does I only have memory to work from.
