Re: Major Wilson
In Response To: Major Wilson ()

I have a copy of the papers pertaining to the death of Major Wilson that are on file with the Western Historical Manuscript Collection in Columbia, MO. They were a gift from Mrs. Andy J. Brown of Troy, MO and were given to the Collection on February 7, 1959.
The summary states that Wilson and five other prisoners were "turned over to rebel, Col. Tim Reeves, who forced their execution by shooting, in a hollow on the Patterson Farm, on the Old State Road, about 10 miles west of Union, Mo. and 15 miles Southwest of Washington, Mo."

This "note" is at the end of the summary: "Maj. Wilson's decayed body was brought to Troy, Mo. and interred a few days after the incidents stated above. MONUMENT to him erected on his graves by his friends and relatives on August 2, 1870. Mr. F. Morsey, Warrenton, Mo. Member of Maj. W. 3rd. Mo. State Militia, gave notice of erection of monument and suitable ceremonies were had at the time."

The names of the five other soldiers are not given nor is there any indication that their bodies were removed from where they were originally buried in shallow graves.
