Kirby, I checked the adjacent relatives and neighbors of JR Thompson in New Hope. It appears his relatives that joined USA were not too enthusiastic about their service. Other neighbors were staunch unionists (Rieds, Finleys). There were 520 males in New Hope p.o. born 1825-1845 (Identified 110 USA, 30 CSA, the rest unknown or too cumbersome to research). Thanks for the extremely helpful info on units. If only Johnny Graves would have graced this planet another 60 yrs. I would drive to Higginsville and ask him personally.
