Yes, this mate is difficult to pin down. A different residence and occupation every 5 yrs. or so. I
think you are right, but not sure. Are there archives for Mississippi river pilots/captains during the war? I imagine
some were private citizens or contractors not actually listed in service.

Another possibility is that his son's bio. was wrong as it states "served in the Union army as captain of a. company which he raised for service, and did valiant duty for the cause during the period of enlistment." JRT is nowhere to be found in the Lincoln and Pike co. Union army. I can find a Lt. John R. Thompson captured in Boone Co. of the 2nd MO (Martin Green or Burbridge command) on 5-20-62? At any rate, I will try to match this captured soldier with a home. thanks so much
