Thanks for that link. I have a few period newspaper accounts, but those eyewitness reports were most interesting. I had not read that there was one that escaped on a guerilla's horse.
The difference in the 23 and 22 probably comes from the fact that Sgt Tom Goodman was held hostage by Anderson, with the idea that he would be exchanged for a Lt, held by the CSA. He escaped 10 days later and wrote a book about the event, listing 8 of the dead that he knew.
