As a descendant of Union soldiers, and a fourth-generation Kansan, I don't think too highly of Quantrill and his men (with good reason). But as an historian, veteran and fair-minded man, I accept the argument that not all of the guerrillas were "scum of the earth." Plenty of Jayhawkers and "Red Legs" were thieves and killers--the pro-Union version of a bushwhacker. After 150 years can't we get past the issue of which side was saintly and which side was backed by the devil, and concentrate on expoloring the facts and judging each man on his own (de)merits?
