Ashley's Station was a hay station before the railroad was built, then a railroad station during the war on the edge of Grand Prairie very near the current town of Carlisle, Arkansas. The federals were cutting hay on the prairie to haul by rail to Devall's Bluff, when attack by the confederates. Withers was shot by a minie ball through the body, and kept on his horse by two comrades, John Thornton and Bridge Ham. They left him in the woods for several hours then took him to the Johnson farm that night. He died the next day and was buried next to two confederate soldiers who had died earlier in the Ashley's Station fight on Grand Prairie. The confederates captured the place, burned the hay, and retired with a number of prisoners. The three graves were placed in the woods to hid them from the federals to protect the Johnson's farm. The federals would destroy farm out buildings of anyone who aided Shelby's cavalry or Doc Rayburne's partisan rangers. What I want to know who were the other two confederate soldiers buried next to W.P. Withers, 5th Missiouri Cavalry co K. Maybe their the men you mentioned. Thanks R.D.
