John Thornton was with W.P. Withers when he died and helped bury him. He said the date was 8-24-1864, battle at Ashley's Station. Dying the next day, it would have been 8-25-1864. John T. Withers son of William Pitt Withers who lived at Windsor, Mo found the grave in 1911 with the help of Ben Grey who lived on the Johnson farm as a boy during the war. John Withers placed the tombstone there in late 1911 or 1912. On one side of the monument is his fathers name, from whence he came, and the date and cause of his death. It is a fairly large and nice headstone. R.D.
