You are right I should cite sources more then I do.
Ok lets try this per Thomaslegion.net Shelby led an expedition in 1865 to prevent Gen. Kirby Smith from surrendering his forces eventhough Lee already surendered his forces. Clearly the South was already defeated but Shelby being a romantic wanted to keep the war going even though he would of been paroled like all the other ex confederates. Shelby has you know ran off to Mexico rather then live under Union rule untill of course the French left Mexico in defeat. None the less Shelby did readjust to post civil war society and was even appointed a US Marshall by President Cleavland at the age of 63 and served untill his death 4 years latter. What is surprising is that former Gov Fletcher endorsed President Cleavlands controversial appoiontment of Shelby to be a US Marshall. So yes Shelby was a bit of a diehard romantic but he did evenually adopt to post CW society and was a great calvery leader one of the best in the CW.
