Re: Whats a better account of Prices raid?

The short answer is that there is not a book length account of the raid from its inception, execution, and conclusion that incorporates both Federal and Confederate sources. There are several book-length treatments of various aspects of the raid (e.g., Monnetts' "Action before Westport," Buresch's "October 25 and the Battle of Mine Creek," Busch's "Fort Davidson and the Battle of Pilot Knob: Missouri's Alamo," Peterson & Hanson's "Pilot Knob: The Thermopylae of the West," and Suderow's "Thunder in Arcadia Valley: Price's Defeat, September 27, 1864."). Over the years, several articles on the raid have appeared in various historical journals and magazines. One of the more in depth assessments is Dale Davis' "Guerrilla Operations in the Civil War:Assessing Compound Warfare During Price's Raid," which is a master's thesis available from Murray State Univ. Shelby Foote's "The Civil War: A Narrative" provides a nice synopsis and even the synopsis on Wikipedia is not bad. Castel's biography on Sterling Price provides a view of the raid, primarily from the Confederate viewpoint. I know there are several others, but I can't think of them at the moment.
