Your memory serves you correctly, one Confederate two-gun battery was placed on the forward slope of Shepherd's Mountain above Fort Davidson with orders on the 27th to bombard the fort. However, things didn't quite work out that way. One of the 32-pounders inside Fort Davidson hit the gun emplacement, killing 12 according to an account cited in Peterson and Hansen's book, "Pilot Knob - Thermopylaeof the West":

"Col. David Murphy, then Adjutant of the Forty-Seventh Missouri Volunteer Infantry, and commanding the artillery in Fort Davidson, says, 'The Confederate artillery, supported by Marmaduke's Division on foot, advanced up the slopes of Shepherd's Mountain and in the clear air of that region the picks and shovels of their cannoneers could be distinctly heard as they leveled off a spot for the placing of their guns. While this was being done, I was giving instructions to the men behind the guns under my command. Each gun was numbered, and the order was that I should designate the gun which was to fire and the gun crews not called were to reserve their fire until the number given their gun should be called. While thus engaged, General Ewiong came up to where I stood on the parapet of the fort and urged me to open fire on the Confederate artillery that was being posted on the mountain slope.......He had hardly turned away before the first shot came from the mountain side. I immediately jumped down to the breech of the gun bearing on Shepherd's Mountain, directed the aim to correspond with the flash of the challenging gun, then exclaiming,

"Number one! Ready! Fire! Load!"

Before the smoke had cleared away it was observed by the anxious watchers in the garrison that the shot fired from number one had taken effect on the enemy's gun by disabling it and putting it out of action.' " (pp. 149-150)

Reading further, you find out that the gun had been double charged with TWO thirty-two pound balls, knocked out the gun, and inflicted 12 casualties.
