I would say that the Union saw the same strategic value to Iron County that you pointed out in your earlier message, plus that very important railroad terminus. If a certain location had that much strategic value, both sides may want it no matter how hard it would be to defend. I give as a classic example for this the difficulty the Union had in holding Harper's Ferry in what is now West Virginia with its foundries and arms works.
