Re: Provost Marshall Papers

Thanks for the post. The most comprehensive account of the US Provost Marshalls that I read was from Micheal Feldmans book "Missouri Divided". Feldman said that there was a fair amount of corruption in which US PMs would request bribes from merchants in order that they could transport their goods from town to town. I know there were charges brought by the US Army against some US Vols but my understanding is that the conviction rate was rather miniscule at best. Would you say that is true? Are there more comprehensive books written about the US PMs? I dont know if this question can be answered but if a civillian of good repute brought charges against a member or members of the US Army, USV's, MSM or one of the various milita/paramillitary pro -union forces were not the chances of physical retaliation against that civillian high?

Thanks;
Leonard
