Finding a solid answer is going to be a long term goal, but thanks to the help of people at this site I've come to believe that Henry Garrison was a casualty of the war. Since he was from the South (Tennessee) and his wife was from North Carolina I suspect they had Southern leanings, but I have no documentation of that. But trying to identify his killers (his headstone states he was killed) as bushwhackers is problematic. From what little I know some folks were murdered for reasons other than their affiliation with particular view on the war. Generally bushwhackers were sympathetic to the Southern cause which would suggest that his killers were either sympathetic to the North, but as far as I could tell there were no raids by Jay-hawkers into that area at the time of his death. Yet I have learned that Union troops out of Springfield were systematically murdering Southern sympathizers during this time frame. It could be that he was killed for reasons having nothing to do with the Civil War. This may be one of those unsolvable dilemmas. Again thanks for your response.
