As in all census, they often got the names wrong. Hugh Franklin Brown was born in Stewart County, TN and his wife was Margaret Carter , daughter of Caleb and Nancy Carter. Their children in the 1860 census would be Thomas Kelly and John F and Nancy. My G grandfather was born in April of 1863, Henry Small Brown. Hugh and Margaret are buried under two cedar trees just north of the Lawrence line and just west of the present Greene county lines. This event may have made them into Southern sympathizers as my grandfather's name (born in 1904) was General Lee Brown. There is family history that points to their heritage as Cherokee , but unclaimed as they would not have been able to purchase land in 1840 in Missouri. The Carters, Browns, Johnsons and etc came in a caravan around 1838-40. Russel Sage Carter wrote a book in Springfield about these families. The Alexander Carter mentioned in another post was a relative to Margaret or her brother. I do not have the lineage in front of me. Teresa
