I've run across a pension record for a relative of mine who lived in Missouri but appears to have joined the 5th Kansas Cavalry. Was this a common thing for individuals to enlist out of state? My family thinks he might have wanted to be in the Cavalry and couldn't find a Cavalry regiment to join in MO.
