I agree this was not uncommon in MO. At the beginning of the war, there were no Union units in Missouri to join so those "loyal" to the Union had to join units in other States. A case in point is Wiley Britton, author of several books including the two volume "The Civil War on the Border". Britton was a resident of southwest Missouri and enlisted in the 6th KS Cavalry.
