Re: Location of Camp Lane Springs, MO.?

Ralph,

That information helps a lot. I Googled the name, too, and it pointed to Lane Springs near Devil's Elbow along the Big Piney River in east-central Pulaski County. Devil's Elbow is a sharp curve of the Big Piney that is carved out of a huge dolomite rock formation leaving the river at the foot of tall, white cliffs. This is a famous natural attraction in the northern Ozarks close to U.S. Highway 63. At least now we know about where Lane Springs is located.

I see in Private Hardy L. Biggs' online military service record that he is from this region, perhaps in Laclede County to the west. I wonder if that is why he was sent to this location from his regiment than serving in Arkansas. Perhaps there was a hospital near there?

This location is just a few miles west of the major Union base at Rolla, county seat of Phelps County. I wonder if the Rolla army post had a convalescence center of some kind at Devil's Elbow, although this seems unlikely to me. There was just too much guerrilla activity in this area to hazard placing a bunch of sick soldiers in such an exposed place.

There was a small, fortified cavalry post near Devil's Elbow at the intersection of the Rolla to Springfield wagon road with Big Piney River, but this small establishment had no room for a hospital or for convalescing soldiers. The purpose of this Big Piney post, as it was called, was to protect Federal wagon trains carrying supplies southwest from the Rolla post and the railroad terminus at Rolla to keep the isolated Springfield, MO army post alive. Throughout much of the war two irregular Confederate cavalary regiments under Colonels Freeman and Coleman challenged the Union presence in this region, mostly by attacking those wagon trains.

I also saw the remark you specified at the bottom of Private Biggs' service card. Since it refers to his death of brain fever, I wonder if the Camp Lane Springs remark penned at the bottom refers to Biggs' place of burial. As I said, this is a scenic place (I saw pictures of the place in the Google findings), and a beautiful spot for a cemetery or even a lone grave. Did you have ancestors living in this neighborhood? This is located just outside the east side of Fort Leonard Wood in the east edge of Pulaski County near the Phelps County line.
