Kenneth: You are correct. There was no Missouri Confederate regiment numbered as high as fifty in any branch of service.

There was a 50th Missouri Infantry Regiment (Union) and a 50th Enrolled Militia Regiment. I conducted a search of the MO Sec of State's database of Missouri soldiers, as well as the Soldiers and Sailors System of the National Park Service. I did not find a James Boutwell in any Missouri Union or Confederate unit. I did not search other states on the Soldiers and Sailors system.

I find it odd that he did not serve with the other Scott County Boutwells in the Missouri State Guard and Jeffers's 8th Missouri Cavalry Regiment, CSA. There are records for Alexander K., Stephen and William Boutwell in these units, but no James.

Sorry, but that is all i can come up with unless I get some bright idea later on.
